U.S. MARINES VISIT WOMEN’S SHELTER IN REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA
By Sgt. Jason Stender
TBILISI, Georgia -- The Marines of Georgian Deployment Program- Resolute Support Mission volunteered their time to help at the KERA Women’s Shelter, in Tbilisi, Georgia, April 26, 2015.
“We had a good experience with a prior team of Marines, I was excited when the new team wanted to come and work at the shelter. They are great role models for Luka, who has little male interaction at the women's shelter,” said Yulia Mushkudiani, the founder and president of the Non-Governmental Organization NGO KERA Georgia.
The shelter is a locally-run house established for women that come from battered homes; a home for those who have no place else to turn. 14 Marines sought the opportunity to help in the local community.
The director also requested the Marines spend time with the little boy at the shelter, Luka.
“Spending time with Luka was great, he really enjoyed playing soccer and baseball. It was a great opportunity to step away from work for the day and meet friendly people in the local community,” said Lance Cpl. David Minarch, a motor transport mechanic with GDP-RSM and father of a 10-month-old son.
This team of Marines brings together many skills, learned both in the Marines Corps and in their civilian lives, that help to make an event like this possible.
The Marines cleared out and painted the kitchen, played an impromptu soccer match with the neighborhood children, cleaned the back yard and raked and cut grass.
“It was good to spend time with the Marines. Everyone wanted to help in some way whether it was painting the kitchen, cleaning the back yard or just playing with the children, it was a good experience as a whole," said Cpl. Joesph C. Howard.
GDP-RSM is a rotation of Marines in Tbilisi working with Georgian Armed Forces to improve military capability for NATO’s Resolute Support in Afghanistan. While deployed to the country, the Marines will be performing community relations events to help promote international relationships and friendships.
“It was an excellent experience for the Marines, especially for those that have never been on deployment or volunteered in their local community back home. By getting out in the community we are becoming ambassadors of the United States and it shows Marines are more than just a great war fighting organization,” said Capt. Jared C. Templeton, intelligence advisor for GDP-RSM.
